Aab-e-Waba (Water of Diseases)

Success Story


A “Thari Women – Sughra Bibi” was so much involve in the theatre play “Aab-e-Waba” and shared her remarks about the learning she adopted from the play. According to Sughra Bibi “We have been using contaminated water from decades, pouring it to our infant kids and using it for the cooking purposes. On the other side we have a number of dangerous diseases included (her defined words) Diarrhoea, Typhoid Fever, Cholera, Giardia, Dysentery, Escherichia Coli (E. coli) and even Hepatitis A can easily found in our community. After watching this play we get to know how to cope with these waterborne diseases and how to maintain our basic hygiene to prevent from the viruses”. The people of this village being serving water from a swamp. The results of water testing showed an extremely high risk for dangerous pathogens like typhoid, harmful strains of E. coli, and other waterborne diseases. Unless this community—which is already experiencing extreme poverty—pays for a taxi to drive into town for expensive, bottled water, they have no choice but to keep drinking from the swamp but with the hygiene awareness and water boiling practices that has been taught through the play, they can reduce the risk.

She is a Media sciences student in Bahria College Karachi. She attended the theatre workshop on 24 April 2017, she described about herself that she is a valiant and influenced student of her university but she didn’t get any platform to show her abilities. When her teacher assigned her as a CR of the batch who was coming to attend our theatre workshop and theatre play she got something where she could utilize her capabilities. By initiating activities, volunteering for others and managing the batch, Saffa marked her quality in our mind. After the session, we have communicated with her and ask about her, and then she told us that she is the CR of this batch and she supposed to manage them all. She also described that she learned a lot from these activities and now she is willing to stage her own social theatre play utilizing her class students and the attendees of the theatre workshop – Peace Troupe. We encouraged her and offered her that we (Faisal Malik artistic director Thespianz and Nouman Mehmood associate director Thespianz) will provide you counseling, supervision and direction for initiating this theatre play in your university premises. She was really happy and praised Thespianz’s efforts in a good manner.
In earlier May 2017, Saffa called us and said that she has prepared a script which is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous play “Othello”. She customized that play and named it “Nidamat-e-Shak” which means “Guilt on Doubt” and she wanted our help to organize this play in professional manner. We went there and helped her to organize this play, she said that “Sir I was really amazed when you have been so nice to me and you actually came out to help us as you have committed, and I was not expecting that you will help us after accomplishing your session”. After staging a successful thought provoking social theatre “Nidamat-e-Shak” in her university, Saffa is now an official drama club in-charge in Bahria University and now she initiates social and entertainment based theatres, short skits, improvisation sessions and beginners theatre workshops for Bahria university and always gets in touch with us in kind of any support.

Uth Oye

15 Year old Wahid Niaz shared his experience witnessing the Thespianz’s “Uth Oye” and his story was jaw-dropping for every human being sitting in the open air of Arts Council, Karachi. Wahid said“This theatre play evoked the memories adjacent to my past when I was 12 years old and suffered with the alleged drug abuse” But by the grace of god and my parents who took me to the rehabilitation center on-time, I have recovered. “The confession and compliment that I would like to share today on this stage, after witnessing this play, is that If witnessed this play back in time when I was 12 years old so I COULD NOT HAVE USED OF DRUGS, and COULD SAVE MY WASTED TIME & HEALTH the same thing I am feeling for my friends those urged me to use drugs. This play is very strong and I think it can convince any drug addicted to quit that and can prevent any child/youngster to start drugging.

12 years old Hamza touched by the play and felt the character “Kamal” inside him as we also want to get education but due to his father’s traditional mindset he wasn’t able to pursue his dreams. As he said “I get my father with me to watch this play because I knew this play will change his mind as it touched me also. When my father watched this performance, he did not say any single word and went home. I was scared that he will surely be angry on me but eventually this play touched him too and he said you will also get education like Kamal (character) did”
This is not one success story but there are many people especially parents who prevent their children to get education was so much sensitized by witnessing this play and changed their minds on this fact that education will make complete their children and provide a sophisticated way of life.

“The viewers may quit drugs or smoking later after watching this performance but I Quit Now“. These was the words of Pakistani famous Comedian and host, Faisal Qazi who vowed to quit smoking at the project launching ceremony at sea view Karachi.
He was very much connected with the theatre play and feeling many character inside him who were affecting of drugs. In the end of the play, he came to the stage, broke his entire pack of cigarettes and threw away the damaged packet.
He also stated that the play is very strong and I am very happy and satisfied that it will going to teach our generation about the demerits of drugs and smoking, I am very much hopeful that the play will urge other people like me to quit drugs use and smoking.

Famous pashtoon singer Zeek Afridi better known for his most popular song “Bibi Shiri” attended Thespianz’s project “Hum Sub Kalakaar” performance at Home Economics College, Peshawar University – Peshawar that not just made him very much laugh due to it’s humorous elements but also observe the strong social messages in the play called “Kalakaar”. Zeek said “I very much admire and appreciate the efforts Team Thespianz is putting to convey the very sensitive issues such as transgender rights, women rights and interfaith harmony in a beautiful manner. Here in Peshawar we do not have many arts activities and this project is playing significant part in both arts and social sides of the society”. In the end of the performance he sung his popular song “Bibi Shiri” for the students of the college.

Saba – Dreams Matter

As a result of this project “Saba – Dreams Matter” many families and individuals realized the importance of empowering their females as this shopkeeper and resident of Korangi Sector B stated “I used to control my daughter who recently completed her matriculation exam and wanting to pursue a job through vocational training. I feel this play is significantly designed for me and the father character in this play is really me! The play touched my heart and completely changed my mind while urged me to have faith in my daughter and at least give her a chance to pursue her dreams”. Iqbal not just one father but there were many fathers and brothers who related themselves with this theatre’s characters and agreed to disagree with the societal Taboos related to the women and their empowerment.

UW-Bothell Professor Dr. Kanta Kochhar Lindgren prepared this project with Thespianz team. She described her experience of visiting Pakistan for very first time and working with the social awareness organization was remarkable. She said “It was a great opportunity, unforgettable experience and a very noble cause to work on such rare issue like Water Consumption Awareness and I just not truly enjoyed it but also learn many things Pakistan while sharing my knowledge of experience with the Thespianz Team and the related people attached with this project”. She was truly amazed by the Pakistani hospitality while visiting many historical venues in Pakistan organized by Thespianz Team. She spread water consumption awareness in such beautiful manner that has not been portrayed yet. Water Calligraphy became it’s kind of first ever project/performance in Pakistan to being staged.

14 years old Sakina Imtiaz matriculation student from Islamabad couldn’t resist to tell us how much she liked the play and the Flashmob for raising awareness about anti-piracy. She stated I even did not know that our book even can be pirated and the source which is giving us education itself can be scammed and harm the original publisher. Thespianz team has delivered this message to us in a very engaging and entertaining way through their beautiful mascot characters and strong story-line which we cannot forget in our entire life and implement the piracy evaluation we learned in this play for any book we will purchase ever.” Except Sakina, there were a number of students and youngster reflecting the same school of thought after witnessing the play and the flashmob under “Chulbuk Chori” project.
